That $200/month tool collecting digital dust? You're not alone. Most business owners I talk to have at least one AI subscription they're embarrassed to mention on a Zoom call.

Here's what caught my attention this week.

Military researchers evaluating autonomous weapons systems use a concept called "compliance by design" — meaning the rules and success criteria get built in before deployment, not after. They don't buy first and figure out accountability later.

That's the opposite of how most businesses adopt AI. We buy the tool, then hope someone finds a use for it.

The lesson transfers directly to your business. Before you spend another dollar on AI, write down the one specific outcome you need in 30 days. Not "improve efficiency." Something measurable. "Reduce time spent on client reporting from 4 hours to 1 hour per week."

That single sentence becomes your filter. Every AI tool either solves that or it doesn't. Most won't. One might. That's your starting point.
