You bought the AI tool. Your team ignored it. Now it sits on the credit card statement like a quiet monthly tax on optimism.
You're not alone in that — and you're definitely not tech-stupid. You're just being sold tools before anyone explains the problem they actually solve.
Here's what caught my attention this week. Developers are now building ways to test AI tools locally — meaning inside their own environment, on their own terms, before committing to anything. They're not just trusting the vendor demo. They're verifying it works for their specific situation first.
That's the mindset shift that protects business owners too. The failed AI investments I see almost always skip that step. Someone bought the tool, then tried to find a use for it. That's backwards.
The one thing you can do differently starting now: define the single most repetitive task costing your team 3-5 hours a week. Write it down in plain language. That becomes your AI brief — your filter for every tool conversation going forward.
No new systems. No team disruption. Just clarity before the next dollar goes out the door.
What's the one task you keep wishing someone else could handle?
