You don't need a bigger AI budget. You need a smarter commitment structure.
Most business owners I talk to didn't fail at AI because they picked the wrong tool. They failed because they signed up for something with no clear timeline, no defined goal, and no skin in the game from the vendor.
Here's what caught my attention this week. A mining company just structured their AI marketing campaign with a 12-month commitment and paid entirely in company shares — not cash. That's a vendor who believes in the outcome, not just the invoice.
That detail matters more than the AI itself.
When you're evaluating any AI implementation, ask one question before you sign anything: what does the vendor lose if this doesn't work? If the answer is nothing, that's your real risk — not the technology.
One first step you can take today: before renewing or buying any AI tool, require a 90-day performance benchmark in writing. Define one measurable outcome. If they won't commit to it, walk away. This costs you nothing and protects everything.
You don't need to overhaul your business to win with AI. You need better deals, not better tools.
What's one AI purchase you regret — and what warning sign did you miss at the start?
