AI chatbots sound like the easiest first step. But a mortgage executive just reminded us why "easy" can be expensive.
Here's what she found: brokers were using general AI chatbots to answer compliance and lending questions — and getting confidently wrong answers. The AI didn't know their state rules, their specific products, or their lender overlays. It just sounded like it did.
This isn't an AI problem. It's a fit problem.
Generic AI tools give generic answers. That's fine for drafting emails. It's dangerous when the output touches regulated decisions, client-specific advice, or anything your business is legally accountable for.
The lesson isn't "avoid AI." It's know the boundary before you buy.
One practical move you can make this week: write down the three tasks you'd most want AI to handle. Then ask one question about each — "if this answer is wrong, what's the worst that happens?" Low stakes? Great starting point. High stakes? That tool needs guardrails before it goes live.
That single filter has saved more than a few business owners from a very expensive lesson.
What's the task you most wish AI could reliably handle in your business right now?
