AI tools are getting more powerful. The rules around them are getting more complicated. And nobody warned you about that part.
You bought the tool. Maybe nobody used it. Or maybe they did — and now there's new data privacy legislation that could put your business at risk if you're collecting, storing, or processing customer data through AI. That's not a tech problem. That's a liability problem.
Here's what most business owners miss: the AI conversation isn't just "which tool should I pick." It's "what does this tool do with my customer data." New privacy laws are targeting exactly the gap between what vendors promise and what small businesses actually understand about data handling. Regulators are catching up fast.
The vendors won't explain this clearly. They have terms of service. You have exposure.
One practical move you can take this week: before renewing or adding any AI tool, ask the vendor one direct question — "Where is my customer data stored, and who can access it?" If they can't answer in plain English in under 60 seconds, that's your answer.
You don't need to become a privacy lawyer. You just need to ask better questions before you sign anything.
What's the one AI tool you're using right now that you're not 100% sure what it does with your data?
