You bought the AI tool. Paid the monthly fee. Nobody used it.

That's not a you problem. That's a coherence problem — and it's more common than anyone admits.

Grant Thornton just published research showing that even tech companies themselves are struggling with this. The issue isn't finding more AI tools. It's that most businesses adopt AI without a clear line between the tool, the team, and the actual business problem it's supposed to solve. When those three things don't connect, you get expensive software collecting dust.

The firms seeing real ROI aren't using more AI. They're using focused AI — one standardized use case at a time, with cross-functional buy-in before anything gets purchased.

That last part matters. Buy-in before purchase. Not after.

Here's what you can do this week: Before looking at any new AI tool, write one sentence describing the exact business problem it needs to solve and name the two people on your team who will use it daily. If you can't write that sentence clearly, you're not ready to buy — and that's a good thing to know now.

What's the one AI tool you've paid for that never got adopted — and what do you think went wrong?
